PC Matthew died when his pedal cycle was in collision with a motor vehicle in Hilton Drive Aberdeen as he cycled home from duty. He was survived by his wife and young family.
The Dundee Courier reported: `Constable Matthew, who resided at Anderson Road, Aberdeen, finished his duties at two o`clock in the morning. A short time later, when he was cycling home along Hilton Drive, he was struck from behind by a motor car. He was thrown to the ground and received severe injuries... Constable Matthew had been 19 years in the Aberdeen force...` He was survived by his wife and young family.`
The driver of the car, an Aberdeen University student, was subsequently convicted of `careless driving` and was fined £10.
