PC Mitchell collapsed and died whilst turning out the fire brigade in the early hours of the morning. He was survived by his wife and four children.
About three o`clock on the morning of 23rd February 1890, Constable John Mitchell was turning out the Fire Brigade when he collapsed in Albert Street Govan, a short distance from the police station. Although a Doctor was summoned immediately, he died at the scene, supposedly of heart failure.
PC Mitchell was 30 years of age and left a Widow and four children.
Originally from Aberdeenshire, he is said to have joined the Govan Burgh force in June 1885 and had the reputation of being a first-class constable.
Constable Mitchell`s widow Elizabeth is listed as a Female Turnkey in the census of April 1891. It is not known if this was a regular employment or if she was given the post after the death of her husband to assist her in supporting her four young sons.
PC Mitchell`s name is engraved on the Scottish Police Memorial and will never be forgotten.
