PC Graham took ill on duty and collapsed on his way back to the police station. He was taken home where he subsequently died. He was survived by his wife. 


Constable Robert CAMPBELL (46)

PC Campbell died after he was assaulted by a drunken male who was acting suspiciously in a common close. He was survived by his wife and four children.

Constable James FITZGERALD (51)

PC Fitzgerald was found at the foot of a stair in Anderston having had a fall. He was taken home and died soon after. He was survived by his adult children.


Constable Alexander McLACHLAN (42)

PC McLachlan died when he collapsed while he arrested a drunk with his neighbour officer.

He was survived by his wife and two children.


Constable John MCARTHUR (30)

PC McArthur died after he was found on his beat with serious head injuries having fallen down a narrow stair in George Street.

PC Cameron died when he fell into the river Clyde and drowned as he patrolled the docks.


Constable Charles ANGUS (24)

PC Angus died after he was stabbed whilst arresting a seaman who was causing a disturbance in the Canongate Edinburgh.


Superintendent Gavin MILLER (53)

21 Mar 1858
Lanarkshire Constabulary

Supt. Miller collapsed in the police station and died later at home.

He had been Superintendent of the `Airdrie Rural District` for 9 years.


Constable William LESLIE (26)

Leith Burgh Police

PC Leslie died after he fell into Leith Harbour during night duty. He was a single man.

PC McDonald died when he was stabbed whilst dealing with a large scale disturbance in Arbroath Road Dundee. He was survived by his wife and child.

Constable James YOUNG (37)

23 Apr 1851
Ayrshire Constabulary

Officers were policing a large crowd outside a sitting of the High Court in Ayr when the stone gateposts collapsed as they surged forward to gain access to the building.  PC Young (stationed at Riccarton) was crushed and fatally injured while 2 other officers (PC Ross - Beith & PC Murdoch - Stewarton) were seriously injured.

He was survived by his wife and three sons.

PC McDonald died after he slipped and fell into the water of Leith while crossing a dam dyke while chasing a man wanted  for assualt. He had 18 years police of service.


Special Constable James ALEXANDER (-)

Special Constable Alexander died when he was accidentally shot by `Army Pensioners` in John Street during the Glasgow Bread Riots. He was survived by his seven children.

Watchman Colquhoun died of head injuries after he was apparently assaulted on night duty.

PC Pace died after he and a railway policeman were attacked by a mob of navvies who had earlier been fighting with other officers. He was survived by his wife.

Town Officer Thomas CORSTORPHIN (40)

Town Officer Corstorphin died after being stabbed in the chest whilst attempting to execute an arrest warrant on a mentally deranged man who had been threatening members of the public.

PC Ford died of injuries received on 17th March when he was assaulted by three men.


Watchman Joseph COLLIE (-)

Watchman Collie was blown into the harbour whilst returning from duty at Waterloo Quay and drowned. He was survived by his widow and young family. His commanding officer, Superintendent Fyfe was so appalled by the meagre allowance granted to his widow and failure to properly finance the Night Watch that he tendered his resignation.

SC Ross was shot whilst policing a sectarian march which degenerated into a riot.

Watchman Pearson died when he was shot by drunken soldiers as he went to the aid of Watchman Robert Simpson who had been shot whilst trying to calm them down.
